French Horn

Description

This is an assignment for my painting II class. We were assigned to take a section of a picture (so that it's more on the abstract side), scale it up, and paint it, matching the values as closely as possible. There is a second part to the assignment, which is to take a section of the painting we did and paint it in grey scale (also matching the values as we painted them). Unfortunately I don't have the materials to do this over break, which means I can only submit what you see here for my portfolio. However, I must say that I am pretty darn proud of myself with this. When I first choose this picture (I play French Horn, so I had one on hand), I thought that maybe I bit off more than I could chew, since I had no idea how to paint something that looks metallic. It was a learning process the entire way, but I think I pulled it off. There are a few things here and there that I messed up a bit, but that's to be expected, I suppose. What's important is that I overcame an obstacle, and that I'm happy with myself.

Oh, and another thing. I tired to mimic the way the camera took the picture, which is why there is less "detail" in the back, because it was more out of focus. (and yes, the coils are NOT supposed to be in an exact straight line...at least that's how they are on both my french horns)

Part observational, part used from reference picture (couldn't take the french horn to class)
Acrylic on artist board.

Painted during 12th grade, for Painting II.

Very impressive painting. I wish more of my students had your ambition and attention to detail. Well done!
